July 4th Craft – Handmade Rocket Garland

Fireworks, backyard barbeques and flag waving parades. Yep. It’s almost here and we’ve been doing a little July 4th decorating.

Brenda of alphamom’s 4th of July Confetti Popper Rockets inspired me to make our own patriotic rocket garland. She has a great step-by-step tutorial, so if you are interested in doing this project, head to her blog.

It was an easy craft that the kids enjoyed. Our rockets however, do not include confetti or “pop” – too messy for this mom! They sure look fun in the window, but we hope to hang them outside if the weather dries up!

As you read this, I am almost home from my weekend in Vegas!

On my last trip to Vegas, I fell for these two spaces, with hanging lights and floating glass balls...

As is often the case, it takes someone else to see your work in its clearest form. Several weeks back when I posted images from the Alexander McQueen show in New York, someone commented that they loved my blog because it was "the perfect intersection of interior design and fashion." And as I look back over several years of posts - I REALLY love that description!

But, I *AM* a bit fixated on these beautiful awnings. Summer is heading this way (even in notoriously damp San Francisco) and there's something delicious about lounging outdoors shaded under one these beautiful awnings . . .

Interview with New York Interior Designer Sara Gilbane

Earlier this year, the seasoned, Traditional Home and youngster, Lonny collaborated to create a new digital shelter magazine, TRADhome. In it’s debut issue, TRADhome names 20 New Traditional Designers to Watch. On the coveted list is New York-base interior designer, Sara Gilbane. She is known for her classic modern-traditional style and artfully combining low-key and elegant pieces. Sara’s interiors are chic, yet grounded in practicality.

Simplified Bee: When did you know you wanted to be an interior designer?

Sara Gilbane: After my first day of work at Kemble Interiors. I was thrilled to be working with Celerie Kemble and Christina Murphy and once I dove into those fabrics I never looked back!

SB: How would you describe your personal style?

SG: I come from a traditional background and love bold color and pattern mixed with neutrals. My style has a bit of an eclectic loved feel with a sense of calm.

SB: Who would you most like to collaborate with on a project?

SG: Architects Peter Pennoyer or Gil Schafer.

SB: Do you have “go to” paint colors? If so, which ones?

SG: Benjamin Moore Linen White, Dove White, and Super White are always used on my moldings. Farrow and Ball Skylight is another favorite- a pale grey blue that makes you feel like you have been enveloped in a cloud.

SB: Which of today’s interior design trends are here to stay and which ones will we see fade away?

SG: Ikat, zebra, sisal, jewel tones, reclaimed wood, and bold color are all trending but they are classics and will never go away. Perhaps neon is one trend we will (gladly) see go.

SB: Where do you recommend clients splurge versus save?

SG: Splurge on drapes, wallpaper, and a custom sofa ( you will LIVE on this for 20 years and it will be amazingly comfortable). Save on cocktail table, side tables, lamps. With this splurge/ save combo the splurge items are so unique people assume the rest of your pieces are special. Then again.... if you fall in love with something, buy it. Since you love it you will always find a way of working it into your next home.

SB: I love the timelessness of the nursery you designed that was featured in TRADhome. Tell us about your favorite design elements in the space.

SG: We used a classic wool rug with a timeless geometric pattern in charcoal grey, celadon green, and slate blue to hide stains. The room had a tremendously high ceiling so we added silver star wallpaper on the ceiling and a custom painted pale blue and white circus tent stripe on the walls to add a sense of whimsy to the room. The deep mulberry colored rocking chair is one of my favorite pieces. It is so comfortable and the shape makes it perfect for a growing child ( not stuck in a nursery forever).

SB: You are embracing social media and write a blog {Travel for Design}, are on Facebook and can be found tweeting {http://twitter.com/sgilbane}. Do you prefer one over the other? What is your advice to other interior designers who are timid about trying social media marketing outlets?

SG: I love the blog though I do not have nearly enough time to update it as much as I would like to. I need to be better with tweeting! I would advise other designers not to be timid. I was not sure anyone would read our blog and we have over 6,000 hits a day! Go forth and blog, tweet, and tumble!

SB: Fill in the blank. No room is complete without…

SG: Art.

SB: What’s next for Sara Gilbane Interiors?

SG: I would love to design a range of fabrics and wallpapers for one of the fabric houses. I am fabric obsessed!

Everyday there seems to be another issue popping up of another fabulous online magazine. Yesterday we got a new issue of Matchbook, which comes out monthly. I've felt lukewarm about Matchbook in the past, this is issue was chock-full of inspiration! Behold, my favorites!

1. A fabulous round up of a modern-day Amelia Earheart.

2. 50 Green Products - that were absolutely adorable.

3. We all know I can't resist a picture of an adorable pup.

4. I've always loved the way carpet poms look (this is what designers use to select colors for custom rugs.)

5. Amazing jewels.

6. I can't resist gorgeous florals.

You can't have too much of a good thing - I can read online design & lifestyle magazines 'til I'm blue in the face.

Back to Work/Back to Reality....

{Baby G. loves his play mat!}

Today was my first day back at work following a 12-week maternity leave. It was both easier and harder than I had expected. On the one hand, I felt as though I'd simply picked up right where I'd left off; my time away felt more like days rather than weeks. And yet…everything felt different as Baby G. continued to dominate my thoughts as I struggled to make it through a sleepy afternoon without the benefit of a nap.

The idea of leaving him with our nanny (whom I like very much) does not distress me nor do I feel overcome by guilt, convinced I am betraying him by not spending every waking moment taking care of him. And yet...I do feel some regret, some sadness in the knowledge of how much I’ll be missing in the coming weeks and months. I’ve spent the past 12 weeks witnessing every milestone, no matter how trivial and I’ve loved seeing Baby G. develop into a much more alert and interactive being than he was just weeks ago. But I also know that prior to Baby G.’s arrival, I loved my job and a large part of me is excited at the prospect of returning to my professional life, ready to conquer new challenges. I know many of you out there are also working mothers (and fathers) and share these mixed feelings with me.

I am sure you've also noticed the drop off in my posting (and commenting!) over the past few weeks -- and my absence is simply the byproduct of my cherishing what was left of my time at home with my son. Unfortunately, as I adjust to my new role as a working mom, I expect my blogging to remain sporadic, as my priorities have by necessity shifted to accommodate this new addition to our family. In the coming weeks and months, I hope to find my way back here to the design blogosphere, but in the meantime recognize that my reality currently does not allow for the level of involvement that I'd had the luxury of having up until 3 months ago. I ask that you bear with me during this transition and I hope we are able to reconnect soon once I’ve figured out how to fit my passions for design and blogging around my new duties as mother.

Know though that I do miss reading many of your blogs on a daily basis, living vicariously through your renovations and DIY projects and sharing your day dreams and fantasies of beautiful design. I firmly believe that blogging has revolutionized and democratized the interior design world and I’ve loved being a (small) part of that shift. I hope to see you all back here soon for more of what I love, hate and hate to love in the worlds of design, fashion and style.

DIY Handmade Wood Block-Print Tablecloth

Block-print textiles are an obsession of mine. So, when it came time to dress the table for a recent family celebration, I searched for a block-print tablecloth that would compliment the lavender, purple and white color scheme.

When I couldn’t find a tablecloth I was envisioning, I decided to make my own. Using some Indian wood block stamps with a paisley pattern, purple & lavender fabric paint and a simple white cotton tablecloth, I created the tablecloth. I actually have three blocks and originally was going to use the pair of blocks which patterns overlap, but it was difficult to keep them lined up.

For the sake of time, I stuck with just one block and created a pattern by alternating the color from row to row.

Block printing is an art and I am by no means an expert, but I really liked how it turned out. And in case you missed it; Here’s how the ribbon chandelier and flower arrangements were made for the party.

I love the ikat fabric Elizabeth at The Mustard Ceiling made. She has a great tutorial and printable too. Hmmm. Maybe this will be my next project!

I always adore Adore - an Australian online home magazine. And their newest issue doesn't disappoint.

I love that they had LOTS of colorful, patterned gorgeousness.

My other favorite thing - they showed lots of full rooms. I love all the online design magazines, but some show too many close-up vignettes and not enough of the overall spaces... This one is chock-full of inspiration images!

I spent my Memorial Day weekend at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs - relaxing, decompressing, and watching hilarity ensue. Here are some pics I took:

While my husband and I had a fabulous time because it's always fun when we are together, the scene was a bit more MTV-Spring-Break then grown-up-weekend-getaway. The people watching was amazing {there WAS a celeb sighting - celeb blogger Perez Hilton} and the fashion choices were surprising {are thong bikini bottoms in style? because they were all over the place this weekend!}

We spent most of the weekend lounging by the pool, reading away on our Kindles, and did a bit of vintage furniture shopping but came home empty handed.

Sometimes I think that blogs and twitter and facebook and cell phones and pinterest and emails are taking over my life. So it was LOVERLY to have a long three day weekend where I unplugged and relaxed {more about this tomorrow.} Sometimes I can get lost in all the technology in my life, and I need weekends like these to remind me to look up from my fancy-touch-screen gadgets from time to time. Don't get me wrong, I won't be giving up my laptop and moving to the woods, but it does remind me to take time and smell the roses.

Greetings,

Last week's visit to New York holds many great memories . . . but, easily one of the most profound was an afternoon visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art - to experience the "Savage Beauty" exhibit. And I use the word 'experience' instead of simply 'viewing' or 'seeing.' True art should move you. Should transform you. Should alter the vantage point from which you see life.

And seeing the retrospective of visionary Scottish fashion designer Alexander McQueen did that exact thing to me.

Alexander McQueen - (1969 - 2010)

“Alexander McQueen’s iconic designs constitute the work of an artist whose medium of expression was fashion,” said Thomas P. Campbell, Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. “This landmark exhibition continues the Museum’s tradition of celebrating designers who changed the course of history and culture by creating new possibilities.”

The large installation consists of almost a dozen smaller galleries - with various examples of McQueen's work gathered by theme and inspiration more than simply organized by season or collection. It very clearly highlights many repeating themes that ran throughout his career.

So Fresh and So Clean Clean

A couple of weeks ago, we attended the Kitchen & Bath show,or KBIS as it's known in the biz. While it was a bit, well, meh-inducing, there were a few things that we saw that we would like to share. Kick back and take a look:

Toto had some new cool items - faucets and an LED sink

Artistic Tile always has amazing product, and we don't get to see it often because we don't have a showroom in Las Vegas

Many hardware companies were showing super glossy and chic white hardware like these pieces from Atlas

Enkeboll definitely won, in our eyes, for the most fabulous booth. And they make the most gorgeous architectural wood pieces. Here was the outside of it:

And, the grand finale HAS to be Kohler's new insane toilet, the Numi

It is lit in the back, so it can act as a soft nighlight in your bathroom. It has a seat warmer, a foot warmer, and a bidet function with warm water and air. The seat automatically raises once or twice, depending on where your feet are placed when you approach the toilet. Most hilariously, (is that a word?) it has a place to hook up your Ipod.

And here is the handheld control for it. No kidding. I can't wait to see what they come out with next year to beat this.

I'm currently obsessed with the gold/champagne/pink/white color scheme. I could keep the walls mocha {the wall color we inherited from the previous home owners} since I want to wait until we get to turn that room into a nursery before I choose a color to repaint it. How to Hold a Successful Garage or Yard Sale

Spring cleaning is in full swing and for many of us that means it’s garage sale season. Hosting a garage or yard sale is the perfect time to edit items from your home that are no longer used or fit your lifestyle. In addition to de-cluttering your home, a garage sale is a great way to make a little extra money.

Holding a garage sale however takes organization and pre-planning. Here are some tips for hosting a successful garage sale:

Select the Right Day & Time.

1. Typically the best months for garage sales are in the spring and summer. Steer clear of holidays and summer vacation months {i.e. July & August}.

2. Saturday is the most popular day for garage sales, but a Friday or Sunday might also work for you. Go with the flow and see what day is trending in your neighborhood.

3. Serious garage sale shoppers get up earlier, so set a start time no later than 8am.

Consider a Multi-family Sale.

1. Inform family and friends about the garage sale and encourage them to participate. Ask them to help out on the day of the sale and assign them a task {cashier, helping customers, keeping merchandise neat}.

2. Let neighbors know about your sale. If they too want to have a garage sale the same day, share marketing efforts {signage, Criagslist posting, etc.}. Muti-family garage sales always pull in more traffic.

Determine, Organize & Price Items to Sell.

1. Schedule a day {or two} to go room by room in your home to de-clutter and make a list of items you would like to sell.

2. Don’t sell items that are damaged beyond repair or have been recalled. In fact it is illegal to resell items that have been recalled – go here for a list of recalled items}.

3. Make a note as to what price you would like to sell the item. If you have no idea how to price an item, you can always look up a similar item on eBay or Criagslist.

4. Set up a holding area for the items you will be selling. Typically this is in the garage, because it eliminates moving the sale items multiple times. You’ll be able to move the items easily out the day of the sale.

5. In the holding area, group sale items into plastic bins {clear ones are best because you can see the contents inside} and boxes. Be sure to label the bin or box {i.e. toys, DVDs, 0-3 month girls clothing, etc.} and price the items in the grouping the same.

6. Save time by minimizing labeling each item. Instead label the tables, bins or racks {i.e. $5-$10, $1 or Less, $25 or Best Offer}.

Supplies Needed On-site for the Sale.

1. Shopping bags and small boxes to make it easier for customers to take away the goods.

2. Tables, clothing racks and shelves for displaying items.

3. A calculator for adding up sales.

4. Spare light bulbs, batteries and extension cords plugged in to show that items work properly.

5. Tape measure, pens and scissors.

6. Trash can.

7. Paper towels, tissues and hand-sanitizer.

8. Pre-made sticker labels or color coded stickers for pricing items.

9. Newspaper to wrap fragile items.

10. Cash-box, hip-pack or apron with pockets to hold cash and change.

Advertise the Sale.

1. Create a listing one week prior to the sale on Craigslist or a similar on-line site. It’s free!

2. Inquire about placing ads with various local newspapers. Ask how many words, how much it will cost and when you need to submit the information by.

3. When listing your ad, include your big items and/or categories {i.e. 1940s oak dining table, baby gear & clothing}

3. Create signage to be placed at large intersections near your home.

4. Signage should include the date of the sale, your address {cross streets can be helpful too} and the sale hours. Use foam board and make the signs large enough for them to be read easily by drivers.

5. Consider making smaller directional signage if you think people may have difficulties finding your home.

Display items with Style.
1. Remove or cover items in the garage you don’t want to sell.
2. Organize your items and display them in an interesting and easy-to-view format.
3. Use clothing racks {consider renting or borrowing some} to hang items such as dresses, jackets and suits. Group clothing according to size.
4. Place like items together and make signs so customers can easily find what they are looking for {i.e books, housewares, boys clothing - sizes 2T – 3T}

Managing the Money.

1. Go to the bank ahead of the sale and have between $75 and $100 in small bills {$1s, $5s and a few $10s} and a couple rolls of quarters.

2. Designate a person to handle the cash-box at all times. If this isn’t possible, have one person where an apron or hip-pack to mange the transactions.

3. Have a “Cash Only” rule. It’s no fun to get a bounced check!

Fun for the Kids.

1. Encourage older kids to earn extra cash by selling donuts, bagels or cookies.

2. Set out a box of gently used stuffed animals labeled “FREE – Kids Take One” for customers with young children. Used stuffed animals are rarely accepted by charities, so this is a great way to pass them along! You will have some very happy, little customers too :)

After the Sale.

1. Do not bring any unsold items back into your home or garage.

2. Immediately after the sale, pack unsold items into your vehicle and drive them to the nearest charity or donation center {be sure to get a receipt for a tax credit}.

3. Place unsold items curbside with a “FREE” sign.

4. Schedule a date and time for one of the local thrift stores to pick up items that are too big for you to hall away {have them leave a receipt for a tax credit}.

5. Remove all posted signs from the neighborhood.

If you don’t have a yard or garage for a traditional sale of this kind, try TagSellIt. It’s a a traditional garage sale in a virtual format.

I don’t tend to host garage sales {too much work, my hubby says}, but I love going to them. Just downloaded the iGarageSale app for my iPhone too. The reviews are glowing.

A Little Flower Arranging for Our Purple Party…

Last week I showed glimpses of a family celebration for my daughter and explained how I made the Martha Stewart-inspired ribbon chandelier. Today, I’m sharing the floral arrangements. Fresh flowers are a beautiful way to decorate an event and pull together a color scheme. I’ not a professional, but love arranging flowers and wanted to create some for our family celebration.

A couple days before the event, I went shopping at the San Francisco Flower Mart and boy was it inspiring. It’s a great time to go because the vendors are over-flowing with gorgeous springtime flowers. To coordinate with the event’s purple color scheme, I was drawn to these beautiful cabbage {aka brassica} with lavender centers and knew I had to use them some how.

Here are some of the floral arrangements created for the party.

In a clear glass vase, I layered the ornamental cabbage with black calla lilies {actually a beautiful prune purple color} and bells of Ireland {a nod to our ancestors from Ireland}.

In the mint julep vase {purchased at the San Francisco Flower Mart}, I surrounded white long stem roses with delicate misty blue statice {aka Limonium}.

Six mini mint julep vases I purchased on One Kings Lane arrived the day before the event and as I was arranging the flowers. I didn’t plan on using them, but it was meant to be. Originally, I had clipped five white roses to be placed in a wreath for my daughter’s hair. The first hair wreath had white roses with sprigs of misty blue – it was way too heavy looking and a no go. I ended up only using the misty in the wreath hairpiece and although not perfect, it was sweet. I thought to myself, “Why did I cut these roses prematurely? They are too short to do anything with. What a waste.” Then I remembered the sweet mint julep vases. I decided echo the larger white rose & misty mint julep arrangement using the petite mint julep vases.

The misty blue floral wreath didn’t stay in my daughter’s hair and end up hanging around the neck of our white ceramic horse. We thought it fitting though because it was also the day of the Kentucky Derby.

One of the arrangements that I ended up really liking was the tightly packed dark purple carnations with pops of yellow with Billy buttons in a vintage milk glass bowl. It’s a dramatic look, but like it mixed in with the more feminine arrangements.

London Calling

I don't have Bieber fever. I don't get star struck when I have a celeb sighting. But I am still moderately obsessed with Will + Kate. I didn't blog about my Royal Wedding fascination, but I've still got London on the brain. The whole ordeal makes me want to hop a Virgin Atlantic flight over there, have a spot of tea and pick up some new threads at Herrods {I was escorted out of the famed department store when I was 15 years old for having holes in my jeans - I guess the queen didn't approve!}

Since I'm Polish and Russian/Ukrainian by heritage, it feels a bit lame to have any Union Jack decor in my house, but I'm loving this wing chair I spotted at the Ben Sherman shop here in LA.

This Z Gallerie rug is a bit more subtle.

Really, seriously, if I had $130,000 to spare, I totally would have bought Princess Beatrice's fascinator, which is what it went for on ebay {though I'm loyal to my ban.do hair accessories}

I could make my own with the DIY shutterfly photobooth props I saw and fell in love with on the Oh Happy Day blog {you print these and cut them out to make your own adorable fancy photo props}

I will definitely be enjoying a spot of tea and a scone this afternoon!

DIY Ribbon Chandelier in Shades of Purple

This spring we have hosted several family celebrations. One was for my daughter. She requested the event be “purple.” Originally I was going to add pops of black into the color scheme, but my Mom said it would look too harsh. I agreed and instead mixed shades of purple. The result was feminine, fresh and fun.

To capture the moment, I hired Jennifer Jacobson Photography. She took all of the images in the collage above. I think she did an amazing job!

Martha Stewart’s ribbon chandelier was my inspiration and starting point for decorating the party’s main table.

To make the ribbon “chandelier”, I first wrapped lavender satin ribbon around a 12-inch wreath form to cover the surface of the form. Using three colors of satin ribbon – lavender, purple and white – I cut lengths of about 16 inches. Then I created a pattern by knotting cut pieces of ribbon around the wreath at their midpoints.

The ribbon “chandelier” was hung using three smaller cut lavender ribbons and tied to my dining room’s chandelier. I love the whimsical touch and the way it pulled the color scheme together.

Next I will share the floral arrangements and block print tablecloth made for the party!

If You Blog It, It Will Come

Prepare yourselves for a super personal blog post with adorable images to follow...

I have struggled on this blog for the past three years (yes, my blog will be 3 in August!) with how much to share about my personal life. While it's been an amazing refuge in bad times (I've been able to escape from my real life worries and focus on pretty interiors), there's been an issue in my life that I don't discuss that feels like a personal elephant-in-the-room. It's something that I've thought of discussing many many times but haven't. But then I read a beautiful post by the blogger of Peppermint Bliss (read it here, if you haven't already) and I decided I wanted to share my story as well. Because reading her story made me feel less alone.

For longer than I have been writing this blog, I've been trying to have a baby. For 3 1/2 years my husband and I have struggled, failed, cried, had glimmers of hope (we got pregnant through IVF once, which was so incredibly wonderful, but the baby turned out to be very sick and we didn't make it past the 6th month, which was - and still is - devastating,) we failed again... And I've kept poking along, blogging about pretty bedrooms and kitchens. We tried for a year before turning to fertility treatments (we started trying when I was 28 and was reasonably healthy, so we didn't have much concern.)

I am now about the embark on my 11th round of fertility treatments. 11 rounds, oy. And we've tried all the different types, many different drug cocktails. We are currently doing IVF (this upcoming round will be my 4th try with IVF) and I feel like I need to share this on the blog because it's just brutal. And I don't know if I can just blog and say "Oh, look at this awesome chevron pattern" when I'm sick-as-a-dog and feeling down-in-the-dumps. I want to be able to say "Oh, look at this awesome chevron pattern. And I feel like monkey-balls today." So now I can say it. And I feel better already.

I get nervous to post nursery ideas on the blog because I don't want to jinx myself. Maybe I feel pathetic for posting nursery designs when I don't know if I can ever have a baby. I'm not sure why I feel anxious every time I post something baby-related. But I refuse to feel that way anymore. I can't jinx things, so I'm taking a new approach "If I blog it, it will come."

With everything I've been through, I would love a whimsical nursery. Something that doesn't take itself too seriously. Playful. Silly. Fun.

I know that somehow, we will have a family. And I know that I am blessed with the most amazing, supportive, beautiful, incredible husband. And I know someday I will feel like this...

But until then, I have to keep fighting the fight. And I'm glad now that I can share it here.

Oh, and one funny IVF story before I'm done with you for today... When you do IVF, you have to have your eggs taken out under anesthesia as part of the process. I'm not a doctor, I'm an interior designer, so if you are really curious the whole process, google it... Anyways, when I came out of anesthesia, I was in a recovery room relaxing and making sure my vitals were ok before I went home to lay in bed the rest of the day. At some point, they wheeled out another lady who had her eggs retrieved. She was just coming out of anesthesia and blabbering on and on about how she was going to fly everyone in the office on her private plane somewhere fabulous. So when the nurse came to check on me, I asked her, "What did I talk about when I came out of anesthesia?" She said "You told me you dreamed about blogging."

Design Blogger Series #6: What Would You Do?

For the sixth Design Blogger Series: What Would You Do?, I invited four talented design bloggers - all of whom have up incoming careers in the design field. Michaela of Michaela Noelle Designs, Kerry of First Time Fancy, Marissa of Roost, and Mackenzie of Design Darling were asked to design a space around the sleek, white lacquer console by Jonathan Adler by incorporating four or so home décor items of their choosing.

Made in Vietnam using traditional, artisanal techniques, the “minimalist sparkle” Jonathan Adler console is coated in twelve layers of lacquer. It is quite a process; Every coat is allowed to dry for 48 hours and water-sanded before the next coat is applied.

“My style is a mix of modern and vintage, so I knew I wanted to add a touch of vintage with the juxtaposition of a few whimsical items. I can see this console table in a foyer. I imagine the walls painted this cool shade of gray {Benjamin Moore's Cobblestone Path} to add just the right amount of contrast between the white items and the walls. A classic zebra patterned rug in gray and ivory will cover the floors. The curtains are consistent with the geometric shape of the console, but also point to a more vintage feel with the addition of the turquoise organic swirls. An echo of the turquoise is found in the lamp to be placed on the console. The modern white chair will sit to one side of the credenza, providing a chic place to slip on your shoes before you head out. To brighten up the space, above the console I would layer an oil painting from Jen Ramos with an eclectic, mismatched mirrors ...and let's be honest, we all want to check our lip gloss one more time before running out the door!”

{Nursery by Kerry of First Time Fancy}

“Most of the time, if you give someone a console table, they will automatically think entryway or living room. Maybe it's because I have some serious baby brain recently, but I put together a sweet little nursery using the lacquer console. I picked the Jennifer Delonge Glam Glider because I love the simple lines of it, and think it looks like the perfect spot to curl up with a babe in the wee hours of the night. The Aerial Crib mimics the same clean lines, while the Tiger Boo rug brings some fun and colour to the space. Then, to give the console purpose in the space, I picked the Jonathan Adler Giraffe Lamp to go on top, and some Pottery Barn canvas buckets for storing baby toys underneath. If we had, had a bigger budget for our own nursery, I am sure at least a few of these pieces would have made their way in.”

* Simplified Bee’s favorite thing about Kerry’s design: thinking out of the box and placing the console in a nursery!

"I am usually drawn to pretty traditional design, so it was fun for me to step out of the box to use this cool modern console in my imaginary entryway design! I started with Navy Bean Grasscloth from Phillip Jeffries. Grasscloth is so classic and works well with a lot of styles. In my imaginary entry, there is a nice big set of windows, which I would frame with Lyrical Branches Curtains from World Market. A lot of the other elements I chose for this room are very symmetrical and/or geometric, so I like the flowing, organic lines of the branch pattern. Under foot, I chose the grey Riviera Rug from Calypso St. Barth, and overhead, Troy Lighting's amazing Sausalito Pendant. I love gold accents--so glamorous and refined. Under the console, more gold with a pair of Circe Benches with Greek key detail, which I'd reupholster in Tapdance by Stout Fabrics, available at Decorator's Best. I love mirrors in entry ways (or anywhere, really), and I chose Horchow's Bone Inlay Mirror as the statement piece for this entry. I can't get over how beautiful and intricate it is! This is a pretty pricey little design, but a girl can dream. Or surf Craigslist to DIY some of it myself!"

* Simplified Bee’s favorite thing about Marissa’s design: it’s a toss up between the bone inlay mirror and the Greek key bench.

"I love Jonathan Adler having interned for him last summer so this challenge was a real treat! I envision his divine lacquer console in a playfully chic foyer. My first move is to soften its straight lines with a curvy framed mirror and to-die-for vintage chairs. His traditional-with-a-twist zebra rug is a must and I love that the Quadrille Kazak pillow ties in both the orange and the hot pink. Topped with a sparkly chandelier, it's everything a preppy foyer should be!"

* Simplified Bee’s favorite thing about Mackenzie’s design: the pillow in Quadrille Kazak {swoon} – it pulls it all together beautifully.

Don’t you love what these gals have created? Each of these spaces has a distinct feeling, but I couldn’t help but notice the similarities: 1. Three out of the four used the lacquer console in a foyer, 2. Three out of the four coupled it with an animal print rug, 3. All paired it with a upholstered chair or bench, 4. All incorporated lighting that makes a strong statement. What similarities or differences do see?

I was super excited to see their article on re-organizing your closet and making use of a small closet. (Because as much as I love a gorgeous walk-in closet, I'm stuck with a little one like in the first image below.)

There's Something About Orange

While just about any technicolor shade is right on trend this summer, there's something about orange that I'm loving right now. Perhaps it's because orange seems just right for the increasingly warm weather. Or maybe it's just the punch of bold, bright, cheerfulness that my wardrobe needs right now. Or maybe it's got something to do with how well it pairs with other colors I love like navy blue, turquoise and white. Regardless, orange is a "must have" for me this summer.

The key to pulling off head-to-toe orange? Keep the silhouette simple and streamlined; the color is the standout here, so keep the details unfussy and accessories (try just some simple gold jewelry) to a minimum. Also, stay monochromatic if you want to keep the look feeling sophisticated and edgy as too many bold colors easily read as too young. Nude shoes are a great (and leg-lengthening) choice.

Despite my love of statement-making color, I'll confess I don't always have the hutzpah to wear head-to-toe brights myself. I all too often tend to retreat behind black, navy or gray. If you're anything like me (and I expect many of you are), then the easiest way to play with the bolds and brights found on the Spring 2011 runways is to incorporate these shades into your existing wardrobe in smaller doses, via shoes, jewelry, and handbags.

Happy Tuesday! I've got a new blog feature here on The Goods called "A Day in the Life." I'm always curious about how other creative ladies/freelancers spend their day, so occasionally I will be snapping pics of my day and sharing them with you in my A Day in the Life columns.

8:03 - reading blogs, tweets and emails in bed.
I have three offices. 1: my real office, which I rarely use
2: my den which has a desktop computer and my puppy's favorite sofa.
3: my bed. my favorite "office" to work in.

10:17 - popping over to a client's home to pick up lampshades. decided to take some shots of the design progress.

10:24 - client's dining room. it's all coming together!

12:41 - dropping off the lampshades and the trim with Sherry - the amazing woman at Ralph's Interiors who helps me with all my upholstery/pillow/trim needs! Love our visits. They make work feel like not-work.

12:45 - one of Sherry's puppies says good-bye as I head out.

1:38 - lunch & coffee with my friend Marissa.

4:23 - putting together a mood board for another wonderful client.

4:58 - trying to take a look of some Kelly Wearstler fabrics for a client - my design assistant decides to hijack the photo.

7:11 - off to spinning! because blogging does nothing to keep my booty looking nice.

Interior Designer: Amanda Nisbet’s NYC Home

Colorful, layered and inviting. Amanda Nisbet’s designs are some of my favorites. Recently New York Social Diary interviewed Amanda and toured her lovely New York City home. Let’s take a closer look…

In the front entry {above} colorful tulips greet guests and bark skin handmade paper from Caba Company covers the walls.

In the living room, Amanda divides the space into two seating areas. A console table separates the sofas and houses a pair of Aurora double gourd lamps by Christopher Spitzmiller. A macassar ebony coffee table from Pollack is placed in front of a sofa topped with raspberry and tangerine pillows {fabric from Manuel Canovas}.

Original artwork in various styles is hung throughout the living room. Between the widows draped in tangerine fabric by Pierre Frey, an abstract painting by artist Maureen Russell is hung. For a coffee table, Amanda selects a playful ottoman upholstered in a zebra print.

Adding wonderful texture, an oval, handmade ceramic mirror by artist Eve Kaplan is hung above the fireplace mantel. Amanda is a master of mixing styles, colors and pattern. Here she pairs modern, purple velvet covered Lucite stools with gilt French console from Gerald Bland. The console is layered with colorful books, family photographs and modern art.

I love to see how a room evolves overtime. Here’s a photo of Amanda’s living room a couple of years ago. As you can see some changes have been made. The drapes {now tangerine}, stools {replaced the pillow tucked under the console} and sofa {darker upholstery fabric} are all new.

The formal dining room features beautiful parquet wooden floors, crystal scones from Niermann Weeks and stunning crystal girandoles atop the dining table {a family heirloom}. Between the windows artwork, ‘White Wave’ by James Nares coordinates with the lilac covered dining chairs and really pops against the Venetian plaster walls.

Love these tufted chairs covered in a brown silk ikat fabric with black lacquer legs flanking the traditional fireplace mantel in the dining room.

Amanda’s master bedroom is serene. A muted palette of pink and yellow are quiet feminine. Farrow & Ball ‘Tarlow’ covers the walls. A built-in, white bookcase provides additional storage and adds visual interest to the room.

A sweet canopy in ‘Springtime Rose’ fabric by Christopher Farr frames the bed beautifully.

The color pink is carried into the master bath with the ‘Pali’ wallpaper by Manuel Canovas. It is a bold statement and apparently one that surprised her husband.

Amanda’s daughter’s bedroom features shades of lavender in the Roman shade, throw pillows {love the ikat!} and throw at the foot of the bed. And more outstanding artwork!

Here is a look at Amanda's boy’s bedroom. The persimmon banded headboard with nail head, vintage tree art and wallpaper ceiling are my design favorite elements.

Benjamin Moore’s Jalapeño Pepper covers the walls in the study. Gorgeous ikat pillows by Madeline Weinrib are layered on the sofa and slipper chair. A pair of 1940's brass bar stools are place in front of the sofa and used as drink tables.

The eat-in kitchen breakfast nook has also been updated {see the old version below}. The cozy banquette is now covered in an avocado leather or vinyl fabric and a banded Roman shade replaces blinds. The chairs, table and photo art remain the same.

Locked, loaded and ready to roll!

Yes, I know I've been a very bad blogger, but y'all may be unsurprised to hear that being a new mom and blogging regularly aren't exactly simpatico. In any case, while I promise better, design-oriented posts later this week, I wanted to pop in this morning and get folks' thoughts on cars.

2011 Acura RDX

While this isn't exactly a car blog, I thought you, my lovely and smart readers, might have some valuable opinions and insights on purchasing a "mom" car. After swearing up and down I wasn't going to succumb and trade in one of our small sedans for a SUV just because I happened to have a 15-lb. bundle of joy...well, just 10 weeks in, and I'm succumbing and we're going to start looking for a smaller, crossover SUV later this year.

2011 Volvo XC60

So here are my criteria: (1) comfortably fits rear-facing car seat while allowing ample room in the front for 6'-plus parents (something our current cars do not allow); (2) reasonable amount of cargo space for carting gear, groceries and the occasional flea-market score; (3) not so big that I'll detest driving it (I had a 4-runner for exactly a year in law school before trading down to a Matrix -- it was way too big for me then, and still is now); and (4) under $35k. Oh and yeah, I'd like leather seats, too.

2011 Volkswagen Tiguan

Tall order? I certainly hope not! Right now, I'm thinking about the Acura RDX, the Volvo XC60 and the Volkswagen Tiguan. I currently own an Acura TSX (and love it; we'll be trading in Dave's older Pontiac Grand Prix), but I have very little experience with Volvos or Volkswagens personally. There are things that I like and dislike about each of these models, but I'd prefer to hear your opinions uncolored by my own so I won't go into details here.

Have you owned any of these cars or know of someone who does? If so, would you recommend one (or all of them)? Do you have any other suggestions? Regardless, would very much appreciate your thoughts!

Interior Designer: 1940s Home by Angie Hranowsky

Inviting interiors with layered patterns, pops of modern and a pinch of vintage. This is what comes to mind when I think of interior designs by Angie Hranowsky of South Carolina. The graphic designer, turned decorator overnight when images of her home graced the pages of Metropolitan Home. Most recently, a 1940s home decorated by Angie was featured in the May/June issue of Lonny. I live in ranch home built in 1940, so I really enjoyed seeing what she created. Here are just some of the images of the stylishly eclectic, relaxed, yet sophisticated design.

"I'm Gonna Wash That Man . . . "

Greetings,

We all have our morning rituals. Mine are quite simple. Up around 6am - to the sound of my iPhone barking like a dog (don't know why, but it's my favourite alarm sound!) A quick cup of blindingly hot English Breakfast tea . . . maybe a bit of oatmeal with almond butter. A quick run of a couple of miles - just to get the heart up and pumping - and get the old "grey matter" functioning.

Then - I head to the shower. There's not a better way to start my day than with a hot shower and clean hair.

A while back I posted a collection of bathroom images - but, the focus seemed to skew a bit more towards bathtubs - and someone rightly commented at the time that we, as a culture, seem to be much more of a 'shower' crowd. So, I promised then that a 'shower posting' would be in the works - and thus, today little missive was born.

So wipe the steam off the mirror - and have a look . . .

Window Treatment Ideas for Bay Windows

Today I’ve asked Tammy Tant, a window covering specialist at BG Custom Windows and blogger at In Stitches to share with us solutions for covering bay windows. She has over 20 years experience in the creating custom window treatments for interior designers and homeowners.

A bay window is a group of windows, usually three or five, that are set at angles to each other and can be challenging when deciding how to cover them. Some of the main areas to consider are architecture, privacy, heat gain or loss and air flow. This room is in a house on Martha's Vineyard and the designer, Lisa Sternfeld didn't want to obstruct the gorgeous views of the sea. If you are lucky enough to have an amazing view and don't need privacy then feel free to leave your bay windows bare.

Most of us aren't that lucky and our rooms can really be enhanced by the perfect window coverings. You can treat each window separately with individual shades and valances like I did in this breakfast nook. This is a good option if you have several inches of wall space between each window casing.

Putting stationary side panels on the outside edges and a continuous valance across the top is a great option if you don't need privacy or you are putting individual blinds or shades at each window. These swags and panels frame the window in an elegant way that is a little more formal.

Do you have beautiful trim that you don't want to cover ? If so and you want a clean look, shutters can be a great solution. They are available painted or stained and come in varying louver sizes depending on the look you want.

My favorite treatment for a bay or bow window is to have the rods mitered in the corners if they are made of wood. Mitering is tricky and I recommend a professional installer for this one. Iron rods use a special corner bracket to join them in the corners. This treatment allows you to fill in all the wall spaces with curtain panels for a soft look and feel and you can close each panel for privacy.

Some bays are inset and have wall space above the window. On these types of windows you can mount your treatment on the outside so it frames the bay. We used 3" wood poles and 3 widths of silk in these panels that are lined and interlined to make them nice and full.

Another option is to hang your valance from medallions, this is a great look for a kitchen or breakfast nook {below}. They come in different diameters and can be made of wood or iron. You can also hang panels from these instead of a rod.

Tobi Fairley's Arkansas home is featured in this month's Traditional Home. While I'd seen many of the rooms before via her online portfolio, I was still excited to see one of my favorite designers featured -- and to see a few "new to me" rooms. Her entryway, with its bold black and white wallpaper is certainly a stunner, but it's actually the Vitruvian scroll molding on the stairs that really caught my attention. What's more, I knew I'd seen it recently in House Beautiful....

With its softer, cooler color palette, this dining room by John Howard (Phoebe Howard's husband) is just about a complete 180 from Fairley's bold entryway, and yet the pattern works just as beautifully here as a subtle nod to the North Carolina home's beach locale.

While the motif has traditionally appeared on architectural friezes, there's no need to restrict the pattern to hard surfaces. In this living room, Katie Ridder creates architecture and movement with draperies edged in Vitruvian srcoll trim.

Want to know more? The pattern is a classic -- literally -- and you'll find it featured prominently on Greco-Roman buildings and mosaics dating back thousands of years. The name Vitruvian Scroll is for Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, a first century B.C.E. Roman architect whose book De Architectura was immensely popular during the Renaissance. And yet, despite its antiquity, the pattern (like greek key, the angular variant of the same scroll motif, which I waxed poetic about HERE) still feels modern and fresh to me. The soft curves of the Vitruvian scroll, however, reads as more feminine, more sensuous. And, since it's not experiencing quite the same level of popularity right now as greek key, it also reads as a bit more unusual.

Just sharin' what's in my head.

Greetings,

We're still swarmed with projects here at the office - but, I know if I keep my nose to the grindstone - my reward will be a few days in New York for BlogFest 2011! Can't wait. It's going to be a great experience - and I'm so looking forward to greeting the old friends that I only seem to see at these design events. Oh, and meeting NEW friends as well. I've always felt that our 'self-built' community is one of the best parts of this whole design blogging explosion.

But, in the meantime - I'm having "The Scot Meacham Wood Design Dancers" work up a little number. And we're even having custom tartan dance costumes produced . . . lol . . . (btw - I LOVE this guy - my hope is that we could ALL have this much fun doing what we love . . . lol)

San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2011–The Kitchen & Cookbook Nook

San Francisco-based interior designer, Tish Key blended old and new elements when designing the kitchen in this year’s San Francisco Decorator Showcase. The completely remodeled galley-style kitchen features traditional pecan floors with a modern, glossy white painted ceiling.

Tish kept the original brick archway and added a state-of-the-art stainless steel range with sparkling white marble mosaic backsplash. Inset in the tiles, is a large Roman numeral clock that is fully functional.

The clean-line, white cabinets showcase sleek pulls and large octagon knobs {which are actually door knobs} in polished nickel. Above is a detail of some open shelving that is backlit in a soft blue light.

Beautiful calacutta marble is used for the sink and surrounding counter. The faucet, by Waterworks is kept simple. Vintage Campbell Soup can lining the window add a splash of color and nod to the past.

Cobalt blue lava stone countertops flank the sink and again add that “new” element to the space.

The sweet breakfast area is positioned next to an old stained glass bowed window which faces the front of the house. The area is also warmed by the chocolate wallcovering by Donghia. The vintage dining table is anchored with a simple white chandelier. The relaxed Roman shade in a Katie Leede & Company fabric adds a fresh, fun pop of blue that plays off of the colorful wall art.

Just off the kitchen, sits a sweet, yet sophisticated “Cookbook Nook.” Designed by Brian Dittmar, the cozy spot is tucked underneath the home’s grand, curved staircase. Like the kitchen, Brian incorporates a bit of old and new in the space. A dark, 1930s Swedish Art Deco Secretaire desk is the perfect scale for the room. Above hands a playful vintage-inspired poster {"Phoebe the Lettuce Queen" by Cassandria Blackmore} – a nice tribute to the beautiful, modern woman that does it all!

In the bay window, an inviting lounge chair is covered in a modern gray mohair with contrasting welt by and topped with opulent silk pillows {fabrics from Kravet & Lee Jofa}. The beautiful detailed trim in the yellow silk pillow is by Kelly Wearstler for Lee Jofa. The floor length drapes are made in an exquisite fabric by Oscar De La Renta {also for Lee Jofa} that pulls together the saffron and gray color palette nicely. In the corner a floor-to-ceiling built-in bookcase houses a collection of cookbooks, a small television and other decorative treasures. This room is a gem.

Oh. good. grief. It's been a busy few days - and looks like several more are going to follow. I had the great pleasure of being the guest speaker at the Alameda Tea Club on Monday afternoon - and now have the 2 day photo shoot for my upcoming One Kings Lane sale later this month! Oh, and I'm running a design business too . . . lol . . .

I always love being busy - but, this is getting kinda silly . . . but, all this activity is at least some good cardio. I'll let you know if there is any weight loss - lol!
